Gianaris, Simotas Cast Their Votes

Seeking re-election, Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas headed to the polls to cast their votes for the 2016 presidential race, and local races, including their own. Senator Gianaris, who is also the Deputy Democratic Conference Leader, represents the 12th Senate District. Assemblywoman Simotas represents the 36th Assembly District.

Senator Michael Gianaris said, “I am proud to have the honor of representing so many of my neighbors in Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Ridgewood and Woodhaven, and working alongside them on the important issues about which we care passionately. I encourage everyone to exercise his or her right to vote in this historic election.”

Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas further commented: “I’m proud that I have exercised the most important right that we have as Americans – the right to vote! In so many ways, the world we now live in can feel uncertain and dangerous, and that means it is crucial that people go to the polls and choose the local, state and federal representatives who will put the public interest above all else. It is my sincere hope that all Greek-Americans who can vote, will vote, whichever way their conscience guides them, and by doing so demonstrate Hellenic-Americans’ strength and commitment to democracy.”

Senator Gianaris is a leading reformer on voting rights issues, and is the author of the Voter Empowerment Act which would register more than two million eligible New Yorkers to vote. In addition to automatically registering eligible, consenting citizens, the Voter Empowerment Act would allow voters to automatically update their information, permit pre-registration of 16- and 17- year-olds, automatically transfer the registrations of New Yorkers who move within the state, provide access to voter registration records and registration of eligible citizens online, and allow people to register or change their party later in the election cycle.
