(L. to r.) Council Member Costa Constantinides, state Senator Michael Gianaris, Representative Joe Crowley, and Assembly Member Aravella Simotas were joined by two jubilant Astoria homeowners after Amtrak’s decision to rescind their proposed rent increase. On Friday, November 4th, Representative Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, along with State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assembly Member Aravella Simotas, and Council Member Costa Constantinides, were joined by local residents to discuss rent hikes for properties owned by Amtrak adjacent to the trusses of the Hell Gate Bridge. Following the elected officials’ denouncement of the exorbitant proposed rent increase, the officials, along with Astoria renters and owners, rejoiced in Amtrak’s decision to halt any further actions or negotiations regarding properties that many homeowners in Astoria have leased for decades.
