On October 25th, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas honored 52 local students with official NYS Assembly Certificates for successfully completing the 2016 Summer Reading Challenge. Each summer, Simotas hosts this challenge for local students to read every day, and provides them with an age appropriate reading list and a calendar to mark their progress.

Simotas’ program encourages students to delve into books and embrace reading outside of class. “Strong reading skills are the foundation of a good education, and I hope to inspire students to appreciate good books and spend time reading during the summer months,” Simotas said. “I developed my love of reading in school with lots of encouragement from my parents, and I think the Summer Reading Challenge encourages the same excitement for these students,” Simotas explained to this year’s honorees.

Nine students were invited to Simotas’ office to meet the Assemblywoman and receive their certificates in person. Over cookies, cupcakes and juice, the students talked with Simotas about their favorite books and classes at school, as well as their ambitions. “These bright young people are proof of the power of reading,” said Simotas. “Education breeds success, and encouraging reading among Astoria’s youth is a great way to ensure that the next generation is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
