Steinway Street Hotel Rises To 289 Rooms

Developers have released revised plans for a massive hotel at the northwest corner of Northern Boulevard and Steinway Street, on a site formerly occupied by a Western Beef Supermarket and four adjacent parcels formerly controlled by the food retailer.

As first reported in the Queens Gazette on September 14, initial plans for the hotel called for 18,200-square-feet of commercial space on the ground floor, with a potential to expand the retail space to 30,000-square-feet.

Plans submitted to the Department of Buildings in October call for an increased 119,722-sauare-feet of commercial space, a bar and a breakfast room on the ground floor of the 60-foot-tall building.

Plans call for 14 hotel rooms in the cellar level of the hotel, 28 rooms on the ground floor, 67 room on the second floor, 66 rooms on each of the third and fourth floors, and 49 rooms on the fifth floor. That’s a total of 289 hotel rooms, an increase from the 272 rooms announced in September by marketing agent Robert K. Futterman & Associates, LLC.

Interior demolition is underway at the supermarket, and an adjacent car wash, spa, restaurant and parking garage have been shuttered, facing a wrecking ball to make way for the project. Revised plans   include a 77-car garage, a gym, a food prep area and break room on the cellar level.

The development is located in the Dutch Kills section of Long Island City, near the 36th Street M/R subway lines and the Q101 bus line. It is within walking distance to the 31st Street elevated subway line and the Queens Plaza transportation hub.

A rendering offered by RKFutterman shows the hotel entrance on the Steinway Street commercial strip, within walking distance to the Kaufman Astoria Studios, the Museum of the Moving Image and a series of sound stages located in the former Standard Motor Products Building.

Robert K. Futterman & Associates is acting as agent for the retail portion of the project. The development is scheduled for completion in Spring 2018.
