NYPD: Thieves Target Women At Rego Center Mall

By Liz Goff
NYPD officials are warning female shoppers at the Rego Center Mall to remain alert when shopping at the Rego Center Mall, where a team of thieves has been robbing women – and women with baby strollers.

Cops said the thieves have struck four times in the last four weeks, stealing valuables, cash and mobile phones from women who left their bags unattended in shopping carts or baby strollers as they shopped for merchandise.

Speaking at an October 19 meeting of the 112th Precinct Community Council, 112th Precinct Crime Prevention Officer Alex Avilla said the crooks might “reach into your bag. If they see a wallet, they are going to take the wallet.. If they see a cell phone, they might take your cell phone.”

Avilla, who has plastered the mall with flyers warning female shoppers to beware, said the thieves stole items from women shopping at a number of stores in the mall, including Marshalls and Costco. Each of the four thefts took place in the late afternoon, between September 19 and October 16, Avilla said.

“Let’s not give these criminals anything,” Avilla said. “Keep your personal property close to you.”

Precinct officials tweeted the flyer that reports the “recent uptick in theft from unatt4nded property, and lists tips for shoppers. “Never hang your pocketbook on a stroller,” the flyer reads. “Do Not leave your pocketbook in the shopping cart,” and “Beware of your surroundings.”

Avilla is urging victims to report any theft to police at the 112th Precinct.
