Keeping Fido Safe On Halloween

By Liz Goff
With Halloween just around the corner, pet owners are advised to take extra precautions to keep their best friends safe, healthy – and candy-free.

Animal lovers are urged to follow the following tips to keep pets safe during this sweet, spooky season:

  • Keep pets, especially dogs, in a quiet place in your home while Trick-Or-Treaters are ringing your bell. The constant ringing and door opening can upset dogs that are accustomed to protecting your home and family.
  • Keep all candy, especially chocolates, out of the reach of your pets. Remember, chocolate contains theobromine – a substance that is toxic to cats and dogs. Signs that your dog has ingested chocolate include vomiting, diarrhea or a rapid heartbeat, symptoms that can lead to death.
  • Keep lollipops and all candy on sticks out of the reach of your pet. If ingested, these sticks can block or cut into a pet’s stomach and/or intestines.
  • Sugar free candy containing the additive Xyllitol can be toxic to pets, so keep it away from your dog.
  • Make sure to dispose of all candy wrappers that can be picked up by pets. Dogs sniffing out sugary treats often think they can fill their sweet tooth by eating candy wrappers that can cause a blockage and/or irritation of the stomach and intestines.

Caregivers at the ASPCA are urging pet owners to take extra precautions with pets on Halloween – and throughout the holiday season, when toxic treats can threaten the life of your “best friend.”
