Annual Parade Sails Forth

Photo Walter Karling Symbolically heading from the Old World (Kaufman Astoria Studios) to the New World (Columbus Square), one of Photo Walter Karling The annual Queens Columbus Day Parade, organized each year by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Queens (FIAO), wound its way through the streets of Astoria on October 9, from Kaufman Astoria Studios to Columbus Square on Astoria Boulevard.

This year’s Grand Marshal was NY Army National Guard Brigadier General Thomas Principe, Parade MC was Jerry Iannece, marchers included FIAO President Joe DiPietro, along with Jim Pagano, Gregory LaSpina and Richard Piccola of the Columbian Lawyers Association, the US Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps’ marching unit, Aviation High School Air Force Junior ROTC and Long Island City High School. Elected officials were also present, including Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Judge Peter Vallone Jr., former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., Assemblymembers Anthony Gazzara and Aravella Simotas, the Italian Deputy Consul General in NY Chiara Saulle, state Senator Michael Gianaris, and former Borough President Helen Marshall. A special guest star included Astoria resident and World War II veteran, Luke Gasparre.

Although there were no Columbus and Isabella reenactors this year, replicas of Columbus’ three famous ships, The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria sailed proudly, heading from the Old World (Kaufman Astoria Studios) to the New World (Columbus Square).
