Grinch Charged For Stealing Astoria Christmas

A 26-year-old East Elmhurst man is facing up to four years in jail for stealing Christmas from several unsuspecting Astoria residents, authorities said.

Queens District Attorney (DA) Richard Brown said Frank Garcia packed a blue cart at about 3 p.m. on December 22, with packages he’d stolen from the doorsteps of homes on 47th Street near Ditmars Boulevard.

Several carriers had delivered the boxes, containing an assortment of gifts, toiletries and household items, to residents along 47th Street just in time for some of the items to be placed underneath Christmas trees, law enforcement officials said. That’s when Garcia stepped up as the Grinch and swiped the packages, a DA spokesperson said.

Investigators later viewed surveillance footage from security cameras at Garcia’s apartment building, that show him walking into the building lobby with the stolen packages, a DA spokesperson said.

The boxes contained 10 curtains, a bottle of soap, two bottles of lotion, a purse, a pair of pants and a Bluetooth speaker, authorities said.

Garcia was charged with four counts of petit larceny and four count of criminal possession of stolen property, and was held in lieu of $5,000 at his arraignment at Queens Criminal Court.
