Crescent Kitchen

A A Astorians can rejoice in the new Crescent Kitchen, a little slice of heaven on the corner of Crescent Street and 30th Avenue. This adorable, sparkling clean, comfortable diner re-opened about nine months ago after a total overhaul by its charming owner John Sakellis, who has a lifetime of experience running successful restaurants in the tri-state area. The modern interior features shiny, white tiles, sky blue walls adorned with elegant shell sconces and artwork. The large window sills facing the street hold beautiful glass amphorae and lanterns lending a classy touch for the diners inside and passersby alike.

Crescent Kitchen is open seven days a week from 6am to 9pm to accommodate the busy breakfast and lunch crowd, as well as the dinner crew, with lots of folks coming from the hospital just across the street. Breakfast is busy time with Crescent Kitchen’s farm fresh eggs, egg sandwiches, omeletts, French toast, muffins, and bagels flying out the door to take away, or to eat in at one of the comfortable booths, tables, or at the bustling counter. Spinach omeletts, California omeletts with avocado, mushrooms, and cheese, or the Greek omelet with feta cheese and tomato are just some of the choices. Add a side of bacon, sausage, turkey bacon, Canadian bacon or corned beef hash along with a glass of juice and a couple of cups of their delicious coffee and you’ll want to start every day at Crescent Kitchen. Take a look at their website for mouthwatering photos and you’ll understand why this place is always full on the weekends.

Lunchtime offers all your favorite sandwiches like a classic grilled cheese with or without tomato or ham, BLT, hot pastrami, tuna melt, or meatloaf sandwich. Freshly made wraps are filled with grilled chicken breast, Romaine lettuce, tomato and Caesar dressing, or the New York wrap with hot corned beef, pastrami, melted cheese, onion and Dijon mustard. Choose a wrap for just $6.95 and add a side of fries or a cup of their home made, delicious soup. We tried the lentil soup and the Greek lemon chicken soup called avgolemono and found them both to be delicious.

Salads are a big hit here, with the Caesar and Garden salad available alone or with grilled chicken on top. Chef’s salad is chock full of sliced turkey, roast beef, ham, Swiss cheese, and hard boiled eggs for a filling lunch or dinner. Of course Crescent Kitchen grills up all beef burgers served with cole slaw and pickle starting at just $4.25 and $6.95 for the deluxe with lettuce, tomato and French fries. There are also Mexican and Greek style burgers, turkey burgers, and veggie burgers to enjoy for lunch or dinner.

Crescent Kitchen’s sizzling quesadillas are fresh, hot, and perfect for sharing as an appetizer, or for a nice lunch or dinner, filled with either grilled chicken, sliced steak and roasted mushrooms, or gooey cheese and topped with avocado and salsa. Come for dinner when you can share an appetizer such as stuffed grape leaves, Buffalo wings, chicken tenders, or their home made spinach pie. This hunk of spinach pie was loaded with fresh spinach and chunks of feta cheese and there was plenty to take home. Crescent Kitchen has fish and seafood, meat and poultry entrees to eat in or take away. My companion enjoyed a healthy broiled filet of salmon and found it to be fresh, moist and nicely cooked. There’s also filet of sole, shrimp, scallops, or a broiled seafood combination to enjoy along with your choice of potato and vegetable for around $16.95.

From the grill, the NY shell steak is satisfying as is the roast sirloin of beef, or chopped sirloin steak. The broiled lamb chops sounded good too and there’s also spaghetti with meatballs, eggplant parmigiana or chicken parm with spaghetti. Martin, our kind waiter, was fast and efficient.

Do save room for a cup of Crescent Kitchen’s delicious coffee and a huge hunk of their creamy cheese cake, chocolate mousse cake, carrot cake or a slice of the pie of the day. Crescent Kitchen offers fast, free delivery, and pick-ups are very popular as people return home from work on the nearby N train.

Visit Crescent Kitchen for a delightful breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or just stop in for a cup of coffee and a pastry. You’ll feel welcome here and enjoy a break in your busy day at this little slice of heaven.
