Bring On BJs Warehouse, Locals Say

By Liz Goff
Owners of a parcel at 47-01 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City are considering the development of a BJs Wholesale Club at the site, retail experts said.

Mediterranean food wholesaler Krinos Foods occupied the site for more than 30 years until the firm packed up its spices in June, and moved to a new location in the Bronx.

The existing building was the recipient of a series of awards in the 1980s, for its unique design and construction features.

The building is located adjacent to the “Shops On 48,” including Old Navy, Chucky Cheese’s, Petland Discounts, Toys ‘R Us, National Wholesale Liquidators, Marshall’s and a Stop ‘n Shop Supermarket, and within walking distance to the M/r 46 Street subway line and the Q1-2 Broadway Astoria bus line.

Local residents applauded the prospect of a wholesale outlet in the Long Island City neighborhood. “There’s a Costco on Vernon Boulevard, but that’s a long way to go if you don’t have a car,” Pablo Huerto, 34, said. “Bring it on. This would be right in our neighborhood. We could walk over here instead of waiting for a ride to Costco,” Huerto said.

The existing 30,000-square-foot building is listed online as a retail building for sale by Retail MLS.

Officials at BJs Wholesale Club did not immediately respond to e-mails or calls for comment.
