Hundreds marched on Grand Avenue in the August 27 demonstration.Carrying signs and chanting, hundreds marched up and down Grand Avenue in Maspeth on Saturday, August 27th, in protest of the planned conversion of a Holiday Inn Express into a homeless shelter. The city Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the Human Resources Administration (HRA) have proposed the conversion of the Holiday Inn Express at 59-40 55th Road in Maspeth into a residence for homeless couples, or for parents with adult children. Community Board 5 is holding a Public Hearing at 7 pm, Wednesday, August 31 (tonight), to provide the community with the opportunity to learn the specifics of the controversial proposal, interview representatives from city agencies about plans for the shelter, and to testify for or against the proposal. The hearing has been moved to the Knockdown Center, which is located at 52-19 Flushing Avenue (at 54 Street) in Maspeth, since the original venue was projected to be too small. Community members interested in speaking at the Public Hearing may register in advance by calling the CB5 office at 718-366-1834.
