Katch Astoria

Katch Astoria is the place to be in summer and all year long, with an impressive selection of over 50 craft beers, taps, and imports, inventive cocktails, fine food and nightly events. Enjoy cool breezes on the expansive outdoor patio, outfitted with picnic tables for groups and couples to mingle and share the upscale food at this comfortable sports bar; serving mature adults with a taste for good food and fun.

Katch Astoria is located just steps away from the 30th Avenue station of the N and Q lines, and offers adults and families a venue in which to dine on quality starters and entrees while watching the muted screens broadcasting all your favorite games. This is not a rowdy college bar, so leave your attitude and hat at the door, relax and enjoy the cool, laid back atmosphere. I met with John, the congenial General Manager, who told me about a really cool app called “Orange Door Request” that allows you to program your favorite songs on Katch’s juke box for free with the video to be seen on the screens. Katch is tech-friendly with free Wifi and charging stations throughout the space scattered among 60 screens.

Each night of the week features something special. Monday is 60-cent Wing Night, including their kicking Chipotle wings, quoted by many as the best in Queens. Tuesday is Trivia Night, with $3 tacos from 8:00pm. Wednesday is Bingo Night and my companion and I partook of several games of nail-biting fun Bingo while we dined on Katch’s signature Chipotle Burger and flaky Fish Tacos. Thursdays feature half-price cocktails and there is an extended Happy Hour on Fridays from 3 to 7pm. The other weekdays, Happy Hour runs from 5-7pm, then again from 11pm to 1am, so you’re never too early or too late to enjoy a cold one with friends.

We started with refreshing cocktails: kokonut caipirinha and a classic Moscow mule, served in a chilled copper mug. The grapefruit martini is equally refreshing, made with fresh lime and white cranberry juice. Amazing beers, from Astoria’s own Single Cut Brewery to Lagunitas IPA to Allagash White and much more, offer even the pickiest beer connoisseur his or her favorites. You can even order flights of beer to try a few different brews. Pair up your drinks with some of the Chef’s fabulous starters such as maple mac & cheese with Gruyere cheese, Monterey Jack cheese and maple bacon. Wisconsin cheese bites are a house favorite, served with Buffalo wing dipping sauce, and the Southern fried chicken fingers have a crunchy buttermilk batter served with honey mustard sauce for dipping ($9). Katch wings are available with or without bones, with a choice of five different sauces and rubs. Katch Nachos Gigante lives up to its name with a gigantic platter of corn tortillas smothered in Pepper Jack cheese, black beans, pico de gallo, jalapenos, guacamole, and sour cream. Katch Poutine is their version of a Canadian phenomenon, consisting of hand cut French fries topped with gravy, Wisconsin cheddar cheese, and succulent pulled pork. This dish is as decadent as it is delicious, and all Katch appetizers are generously sized for sharing. We even loved the jumbo Bavarian pretzel, light and fluffy, with cheese sauce and honey mustard for dipping.

Katch makes excellent burgers from high quality beef and serves them with hand cut fries. The Chipotle burger is their top seller covered in Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, onion, and chipotle mayo. The Greek lamb burger is another big seller owing to the tender, juicy, ground lamb mixed with herbs and topped with creamy feta cheese, red onion, tomato, and tzatziki sauce ($14). The Bistro burger is topped with Stilton cheese, fried egg and bacon, and there’s a juicy turkey burger and California veggie burger for those who don’t want red meat. Share a Katch house salad at the table or goat cheese salad with orange, olive, red onion, avocado, and scallion vinaigrette.

Katch has great entrée items too, with kudos to the braised Guinness short ribs, slow cooked for hours so the meat pulls away from the bone with a tug from your fork, served with tater tot cake, chili sauce and queso fresco. Grilled, marinated skirt steak is hearty and satisfying, perfectly grilled to order and served with guacamole, red onion, and jalapeno ($24). Seared wild salmon is light and fresh, served with sautéed kale. Few can resist classic fish and chips, made with flaky, fresh cod and Lagunitas beer batter.

Katch’s weekend brunch is served from 11:30am to 4pm, with dinner service after that. There’s a ‘bottomless’ brunch with cocktails for just $18 (90 minutes) with tempting dishes such as their signature avocado toast made on healthy seven grain bread, topped with poached eggs, kale pesto, alfalfa sprouts, and avocado. Lemon ricotta pancakes are light and fluffy, served with fresh berries, while the steak and eggs platter will take you through to dinner.

There’s a very special Katch Kourtyard Kookout BBQ taking place on Sunday, August 28th from 3-6pm. For just $25 admission you’ll have unlimited beer and $5 BBQ entrees, live D.J. and lots of fun as you enjoy the remaining days of summer. Purchase tickets on Eventbrite while they last! Soon Football season will start and all your games will be featured at Katch, along with Sunday football drink and food specials. Plan your own Fantasy Football events here or host any family or business function. Katch’s outdoor and indoor spaces are perfect for birthdays, showers, engagements, corporate events, and more. Screens can be customized with corporate logos and PowerPoint presentations and everyone will love the food, beers, and cocktails.
