Child Abductor Charged With Sex Abuse

By Liz Goff
A Queens career criminal with a history of 12 arrests since 2006 added a new category to his pedigree last week, when he was charged with sex abuse in the recent abduction of a 10-year-old Woodhaven girl, police said.

Cops said the girl was walking near her home on 102nd Street in Woodhaven at about 7 a.m. on July 27 when Shawn Sunder, 28, pulled over in his silver sedan and told the girl he was her mother’s cousin. The girl was hesitant at first, but got into the car after Sunder convinced her it was all right for her to do so, a police source said.

The girl’s grandfather was in the area at the time and saw the abduction, police said. “The grandfather chased the car and grabbed the door handle,” the source said. “He exchanged a few words with Sunder before the door slammed and the car sped away.”

Cops said Sunder drove a few blocks, then grabbed the girl’s hand and forced her to touch his genitals. Sunder then dropped the girl off at Woodhaven Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue and fled the scene.

Cops sad the girl continued to school, where she told a supervisor what had happened. School administrators, who had been alerted by police of the possible abduction, called 911, police said. The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was later reunited with her mother.

Police released two sketches of the suspect, but were unable to identify him until detectives recovered surveillance footage that showed the license plate of the car used in the abduction, a police source said. The detectives brought Sunder in for questioning on August 5.

Sunder was arrested hours later, after the girl identified him in a police lineup, the source said.

Sunder was charged with sex abuse, luring and acting in a manner injurious to a child at his arraignment at Queens Criminal Court, where he was held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
