Rhythmic Gymnastics, An Elegant All-Girls Olympic Sport

Forest Hills Rhythmic Gymnastic Students.Forest Hills Rhythmic Gymnastic Students.Rhythmic Gymnastics is an elegant and beautiful all-girls Olympic Sport.

Rhythmic gymnastics combines ballet and creative movements to music, while working with ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes and clubs in choreographed dance-and-tumble routines. It has a lot more dance than artistic gymnastics. Everything is done on the floor with different routines and music.

Rhythmic gymnastics started as an independent competitive sport in the early 1900s in Europe. In 1963, the first rhythmic gymnastics world championship was held in Europe. Even though rhythmic gymnastics has its own world championships, it did not become an Olympic medal sport until 1984. This is partly why rhythmic is such a little-known, and hardly recognized sport in the U.S.

It has been honored and recognized in Queens since 1991 by a group of students at Forest Hills Rhythmic Gymnastics, who have been training in the ballroom of Forest Hills Jewish Center for 25 hours per week. These children are 4 to 14 years old and they only know one thing: “work” and “work more.”

The group recently raised over $5,000 for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for pediatrics cancer research by performing a rhythmic gymnastics and dance show on their 25th Annual Father’s Day Gala. The school felt that they wanted to help children that are not as fortunate as them who are battling pediatric cancer.

On Wednesday, July 13, Forest Hills Rhythmic Gymnastics is performing center stage for Halftime at Madison Square Garden during the WNBA, New York vs. Atlanta game.

NY Liberty is a women’s team, therefore they were invited as special guests, in support of an all-girls sport. So get ready, New York, because basketball fans will also get a treat of splits, balances, bridges, rolls, cartwheels, flips, walkovers and somersaults from local Queens girls.
Forest Hills Rhythmic Gymnastics, providing quality and personal gymnastics and dance education since 1991 is located at 106-06 Queens Boulevard (entrance on 69th Road), Forest Hills, NY 11375, 718-813-1700.
