Former Editor Jim Mahoney Dies at 85

Jim Mahoney Jim Mahoney James F. Mahoney (6/19/1931 - 7/8/2016) passed away peacefully at his home in Novato, California on July 8. He was born in Astoria on June 19, 1931 to James F. Mahoney Sr. and Mae Mahoney (née Rush). He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, and his five children, Skip (and daughter-in-law, Irene) Mahoney, Mike (daughter-in-law, Heidi) Mahoney, Kevin (and daughter-in-law, Barbara) Mahoney, Steve (and daughter-in-law, Anne) Mahoney and Kerry (and son-in-law, Bradford) Walker. He was grandfather to nine adoring grandchildren.

Jim grew up in Queens, and attended Long Island City High School, where he met the love of his life, Mary. He joined the Navy in 1951 and served four years during the Korean War. He and Mary married in 1953 and later moved to Selden, NY in 1963 with their four boys in tow.

Jim worked in advertising sales for 25 years before finding his true calling as newspaper editor at the Queens Gazette. He wrote a regular column and interviewed many celebrities and politicians.

In 1997 Jim and Mary moved to Novato to be closer to their children and their growing families. He was very active in the local VFW chapter in Novato, where he was a past Commander. His family and friends were the light of his life and his loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him.—Anne Mahoney

Editor’s Note: On a personal note, Jim was a great friend of the Gazette. He set up many procedures and instituted protocols that are still in use at the Gazette. He loved the paper and the community. We will miss our friend, Jim.
