Meng, ZAC Foundation Bring Water Safety To Queens

Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) has teamed up with The ZAC Foundation – a national leader in water safety education and drowning prevention – to educate the citizens of Queens and New York City on water safety through a local public service announcement. The PSA can be seen on YouTube.

Congresswoman Meng and Zeke, the main character in the Foundation’s book “The Polar Bear Who Could Not, Would Not Swim,” have created a PSA that will be distributed throughout the City and borough to advise both parents and children on how to stay safe during this year’s summer months. Meng reviews the ABC & Ds of water safety, and reminds parents to make sure their families have a safe summer season.

“Thanks to the Zeke Foundation for teaming up with me to spread the word about water safety,” said Meng. “We want to help make this summer a safe one and this video helps to do that as many parents and kids head to the beach or pool.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause in children 5-14. Risk of drowning is highest in minority populations; with the fatal drowning rate almost three times that of Caucasian children. Many of these deaths are preventable if proper water safety measures are taken. Water safety is of local importance because in 2014, New York lost 19 children to drowning, and Fourth of July weekend has the highest number of drowning rates each year.

“Our goal is to educate as many children and parents as possible on water safety, and these PSAs are doing just that. We are extremely grateful to have Congresswoman Meng join us, and spread this crucial message during a time when drowning rates are highest,” said Karen Cohn, co-founder of The ZAC Foundation.

The ZAC Foundation was established in 2008 by Karen and Brian Cohn after the loss of their 6-year-old son, Zachary Archer Cohn, in a pool drain entrapment in their backyard swimming pool. Through education and advocacy, the foundation is dedicated to preparing children and their families for a lifetime of swimming safety.
