The 36,137 fans attending the game were treated to one sided affair that included WiImer Flores going 6-6, tying a franchise record and hitting 2 home runs along the way.

The game began with Noah Syndergaard (8-3) facing Jon Lester (9-3). The Cubs were the first to score in the first inning scoring 1 run on two hits against Syndergaard, who has been very stingy on giving up runs.

The Mets got that run back in their half of the first inning on a home run hit by Curtis Granderson. The Mets scored in 6 of the 8 innings they batted. The season high 22 hits tied a Mets franchise record for a home game.  All nine starters recorded a hit including Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard who doubled in the 6th inning. The Mets also included 5 home runs in the 14-3 route.

With former Mets star Jose Reyes on his way back to the Mets, to take over third base once held by injured David Wright, Wilmer Flores the temporary fix, tried to make a case for keeping his job by stroking 6 hits, including two home runs, to help jump start the Mets in the 14-3 victory.

While the Mets were defeating the Central division leading Cubs, their main rivals in the Eastern Division of the National Le ague,  the Washing ton Nationals, were beating the Cincinnati Reds 11-1 to maintain a 5 game lead over the Mets with 7 games to go before the All-Star break. The Mets face the Nationals in a four game series beginning on Thursday July and could possibly overtake the Nats before the halfway point of the season.
