Joseph Crowley congratulates Jackson Heights resident Christopher Adames on his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.Rep. Joe Crowley, Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced on June 28 the appointment of Jackson Heights resident Christopher Adames to the United States Naval Academy. Crowley recently welcomed Adames, who will be a part of the academy’s class of 2020, to his district office to congratulate him on his acceptance.

“I am proud to announce that Christopher will join the group of stellar, accomplished young individuals from our district who will attend one of the prestigious service academies this fall,” said Rep. Crowley. “Not only has Christopher had a decorated academic career, but he has demonstrated great perseverance through challenging moments in his young life, and an unwavering commitment to serving his community – qualities that will serve him well at the Naval Academy. I am confident that a great future lies ahead for Christopher, and he will continue to represent his district and his nation admirably.”

A former intern in Crowley’s Queens district office, Adames was also a member of the National Honor Society, and the recipient of a full scholarship for the US Naval Academy Summer Seminar. Additionally, Adames boasts an impressive athletic record, playing multiple varsity-level sports in high school, while finding time to teach baseball to young athletes with special needs.

Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the US Navy, and upon graduation, serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.

This year, Crowley has had the pleasure of announcing several service academy appointments from his district, including Jaccob Louis Cortes from East Elmhurst and Clayton Kendrick-Holmes from Throggs Neck.

As a member of Congress, Crowley has the privilege of nominating a limited number of residents of New York’s 14th Congressional District to four of the five service academies each year. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Appointments to service academies are highly competitive, with emphasis placed on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, character and motivation. Crowley’s application period opens May 15th of each year for those candidates who are high school juniors and will be seniors the following school year, or who have already graduated.
