Queens Democrats Nominate Maloney, Velázquez, Meeks

Queens Democrats went to the polls Tuesday and selected their party’s choices – Congressmembers Carolyn Maloney, Lydia Velazquez and Gregory Meeks – to be the candidates when they run for reelection in the November 6th elections.
In Tuesday’s Democratic Party primary elections, Maloney (12th CD - Queens/Manhattan), Meeks (5th CD - Southeast Queens) and Velázquez (7th CD - Queens/Manhattan) each won easy victories over their opponents.
Maloney, a 23-year veteran and a leading Democrat in Congress, was opposed in the primary by Peter Lindner, of Manhattan. Velázquez and Meeks, both veteran lawmakers, faced challengers. Jeffrey Kurzon and Yungman Lee faced Velázquez, and Ali Mirza ran against Meeks.
There was also a 4th Democratic Party primary election on Tuesday’s ballot involving the 3rd CD, which only includes a small portion of voters who reside in Northeast Queens, the rest in Long Island. The voting in the 3rd CD is incomplete, however, because there were five people competing for the nomination. They are seeking to replace the incumbent, Congressman Steve Israel, who is resigning the seat at the end of the year.
