The Future Looks Bright For Astoria Students

Brains and brawn – the boys and girls at PS 70 have it all. Over the past month, PS 70 has excelled in academic and athletic excellence. PS 70 is a member of the Sports and Arts Foundation, an after-school program which aims to enrich the children of New York City in areas like academics, health and fitness, and their attitude toward school, while instilling good values and confidence that will help shape the child to live the life they deserve. The children had participated in two recent soccer tournaments, the New York City Football Club Schools Cup (June 4th) and the annual SASF Soccer tournament (June 12th), competing against children from schools all over the five boroughs. PS 70 placed first in both tournaments, with three shut – out victories at the SASF tournament. On June 9th they also participated in the Day of Champions, where the children had the pleasure of playing football, baseball, lacrosse, and more. They earned enough points here to safely bring home yet another gold medal beating out PS 97X and PS 193. But sports are not the only thing these children excel in; on June 14th, students from first to fifth grade competed in the first-ever SASF Spelling Bee. PS 70’s Vera Leng of the third grade took home First Place. PS 70 also had two Fourth Place finishers as well.
