Man Falls From Ditmars Train

A 27-year-old Astoria man was critically injured on May 27, after he fell from the roof of a subway car at the Ditmars/31st Street elevated train station, police said.

Cops said the unidentified man was standing on the platform at about 5:40 a.m. on May 27 when a northbound N-train pulled into the station.

Eyewitnesses told police the man suddenly climbed a ladder leading to the roof of the train and lost his balance. The man tumbled through the tracks, bounced off a car parked on 31st Street and then fell onto the road, police said.

The man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center in critical condition, where he was scheduled for psychiatric evaluation, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear why the man climbed to the roof of the subway car, a police spokesperson said.—Liz Goff
