Mobile Library Tour Celebrates National Library Week

By Catherine Gioino

National Library Week will be held from April 10 – 16, with April 13 being National Bookmobile Day.

To celebrate, the Queens Library will be available in 17 different locations around Queens thanks to its Mobile Library. The Mobile Library, which starts in Queens Village and ends in Elmhurst, will feature a number of government and community leaders who will join the tour and promote reading among children and adults alike.

While everyone is invited to the Mobile Library to borrow and return books, children will get to play with LEGOs and learn more about STEM basics through the help of bricks4kidz, an after-school enrichment program that hopes to foster curiosity among students by playing and building with LEGOs. Also joining the tour on multiple stops will be Shayshahn “Phearnone” MacPherson, a violinist who will play an assortment of contemporary music.

The Mobile Library stopped by I.S. 295 in Queens Village on April 11 and continued to the VA New York Harbor Healthcare and ended at the Bay Terrace Mall. On April 12, it stopped by the MTA Regional Bus Depot in Queens Village and was accompanied by MacPherson on violin when it traveled to August Martin H.S. in Jamaica and then to the Stop & Shop at 134-40 Springfield Blvd.

Also on April 13, residents of Astoria will be able to see the library and MacPherson perform at HANAC Harmony JVL Innovative Senior Citizen Center on Hoyt Avenue South from 9 to 11 a.m. It will then travel to P.S. 111 at 37-15 13 St. and stay there from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m., where it will then travel to Kissena Park and remain there from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz will accompany the Mobile Library on Thursday, April 14, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. at Queens Borough Hall. This will be the Mobile Library’s second stop of the day, the first of which is at P.S. 120 from 8:40 to 9:30 a.m., and it will then continue after Borough Hall to the Flagship Diner in Briarwood from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and then conclude at the Child Center of NY in Corona from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

On April 15, the Mobile Library will stop at the Blanche Community Day Care in Far Rockaway from 9 to 11 a.m. and then head to the boardwalk at 92 Street from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The last day of the tour, April 16, the bus will stop at Atlas Mall from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and finally conclude at the Pan American Hotel from 1 to 3 p.m.
