DeBlasio, Bratton Attend NLCS Champion Mets Home Opener

Photos Dan MIller/DMD ImagesThe 2015 National League defending champion New York Mets opened the season at CitiField by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 behind a strong pitching performance by Jacob deGrom who was on call to join his wife who is expecting their first child any day now.

In deGrom’s first start of the 2016 MLB season he struck out six while giving up no walks on just 76 pitches. DeGrom had a shutout through five innings. With the Mets leading 1-0 in the 6th inning he felt a tightness in his back and giving up the tying run of the game. He managed to finish the sixth and earned the win as the Mets scored two runs and went on to defeat the Phillies 7-2 bringing their record to two and two in this young 2016 season.

Pre-game ceremonies included the introduction of the players and coaches from both the NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio is joined by Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. The ceremonial first pitch was delivered by members of the NYPD and FDNY who were injured in the line of duty in 2015 as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wearing a Mike Piazza #31 Mets jersey) proudly watched along with Police Commissioner William Bratton, NYPD Chief of Department James O’Neil and Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro.

On Sunday, with Mets ace Matt Harvey at the helm the Mets fans had high hopes for another win in the rubber match of the tree game series.

Harvey did not pitch well giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in six innings, leaving trailing 3-2 when he exited. In the bottom of the 6th David Wright doubled and scored on Yoenis Cespedes’ 1st home run of the year, a blast into the left field bleachers brought the Mets closer but not enough to catch the Phillies who went on to defeat the Mets 5-3. Following the Sunday defeat the Mets were 2-3 after one week of play in 2016.
