The large population of Greek-Americans in Queens had reason to celebrate on April 10 as the Greek Independence Day Parade marched up 5th Avenue to mark the 195th Anniversary of Hellenic Independence.

From 1:30 in the afternoon thousands of revelers lined 5th Avenue, from 64th Street to 79th Street. Practically every church and cultural institution of the Greek or Hellenic tradition joined in the festivities.

The parade was organized, as it has been for many years by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. Their office on 29th Street in Astoria spearheaded the day’s plans and all the related activities.

Elected officials abounded in the line of march, including honored guests Councilman Costa Constantinides, state Senator Mike Gianaris, US Senator Chuck Schumer, Councilman Paul Vallone and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas.

The shining sun warmed the celebrants and business boomed after the parade ended as friends and family continued their march toward Queens’ restaurants, bars and food markets.—Tony Barsamian
