Grand Café

Springtime beckons and your eyes look outside, to meet with friends and celebrate this precious, short season. For a grand time, head straight to Grand Café, by now a welcome fixture on Astoria’s hip 30th Avenue social scene. Grand Café is also part of the “Grand-Ginger-Republic” trilogy of decidedly cool eateries run by an amiable (and equally cool) group of friends who call Astoria home.

Whether you come for a robust cappuccino, a cool Cosmo, crispy calamari, a colossal California wrap, or a creative crepe, Grand Café and its lovely staff will cater to your culinary desires.

Grand Café’s style, ambience, and philosophy is this: easy, breezy, relaxed. There’s nothing pretentious about it, nothing that requires too much thinking on your part. Just enjoy it as you settle into your bistro table and wicker chairs, or if the weather is kind, nab a place in the sun. A great place to start is Happy Hour, served Monday to Friday from 3- 7pm, where you’ll partake of $8 mojitos, straight up or infused with fruit, peach Cosmopolitans, or the signature “Astoria-tini” concoction. House sangria is fruity and extra delicious at $7, while house wines and mixed drinks cost a mere $6. Without a doubt, you ought to pair your cocktail of choice with some of Grand Café’s tempting appetizers. The quesadilla eats like a meal, stuffed with delectable vegetables, chicken, steak or plump shrimp, along with melted cheese and salsa, this substantial starter is ideal for sharing with friends. The same is true for the Greek bruschetta, which is actually like a mini pizza constructed on pita bread and topped with fresh tomato, feta cheese and herbs for a triangle of heaven when you take a delicious bite. A platter of crispy calamari pleases everyone, while the mac and cheese is a decadent treat with or without the diced pancetta. Classic Nachos Supreme please the crowd but a great Mediterranean treat is the grilled haloumi cheese served with cucumber, tomato and lemon wedges ($10)

Grand Café has introduced some great new specialty lunch items for around $9 served from noon to 4pm. The “Wisco” layers Havarti cheese, caramelized apples and crumbled gorgonzola on fresh sourdough bread. Hawaiian grilled cheese with shaved ham and grilled pineapple is a popular choice as is the pulled Buffalo style chicken with melted provolone. A healthy avocado toast with feta and mint goes well with a cold pressed juice from Ginger’s kitchen, the juice bar next door. These lunch specials come with field greens or French fries.

Visit for dinner and enjoy salads, juicy burgers and full entrees. The new organic quinoa salad is a healthy toss of grains, arugula, dried cranberries, and slivered almonds with tarragon vinaigrette. The raw Asian salad combines shredded red cabbage, zucchini, red peppers, alfalfa sprouts, and carrots with ginger sesame dressing. Grand’s specially seasoned lamb burger is spread with spicy feta cheese and served on a 7-grain bun and all their burgers are juicy and satisfying, even the veggie burger on a brioche bun.

Grand Café’s grilled skirt steak is one of the most popular items on the menu for its tenderness and rich texture, cooked to order. The pan-seared salmon is fresh caught and perfectly cooked. Choose chicken, steak, or shrimp skewers and any two side dishes to complete your meal, including Greek fries, sprinkled with feta and oregano, avocado, guacamole, sautéed spinach, or mashed potatoes.

The “La Colombe” coffee here is wonderful with a wide array of European style coffee drinks, frappes, teas and cold pressed juices. Stop in for a refreshing smoothie on your way to work or a chai latte. Grand Café’s crepes make an excellent dessert, filled with fruit and creamy Nutella. For a snack or light lunch, try a savory crepe filled with ham and cheese. Treat yourself to a slice of Junior’s cheesecake, Boston crème cake or tiramisu.

Grand Café’s popular brunch is served on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8am till 4:00pm. The fixed price includes a brunch cocktail, eggs, omelets, fritattas, pancakes and French toast, salads, their famous burger and more.

Visit Grand Café anytime for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night snack or enjoy a cocktail in the cozy lounge. The kitchen is open until 1am during the week and until 2am on weekends for your late night dining pleasure. Celebrate Spring at Grand Café where the food is fresh and delicious, the staff is friendly, and the vibe is easy and relaxed. Grab a friend and go to Grand Café!
