Three Dead In Elmhurst House Fire

By Liz Goff
Three people were killed in a blaze that ripped through two homes in Elmhurst on March 21, fire officials said.

The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. on March 21 on the second floor of a two-story home on Ithaca Street near Whitney Avenue and was declared under control at midnight, a fire spokesperson said.

The blaze quickly grew to a second alarm and spread to a private home next-door, fire officials said. The home suffered major damage but no one was injured.

Firefighters found the three men inside the home when the flames were extinguished, the spokesperson said. One man was found on the kitchen floor and the others were found in two bedrooms on the second floor. All three men were unconscious when firefighters pulled them from he house.

Martin Devereux, 71 and Craig Lotz, 53, were pronounced dead on arrival at two local hospitals shortly after they were removed from the home, authorities said.

The third victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he died on March 23 of injuries he suffered in the blaze.

One firefighter was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for injuries and released, fire officials said.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause the blaze, fire officials said.
