Local Skater Takes Gold

Local skater Emma Estrada was crowned National Champion at the 2016 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan this past weekend. Estrada is a member of the Skyliners Intermediate Synchronized Skating Team. A 9th grader at St. Francis Prep, Estrada traveled to the Nationals with her teammates to compete among the 12 best synchronized skating teams in the country in her division. “We’ve worked really hard as a team and individually all season and it paid off. It was a great experience,” said Estrada. Performing to a dynamic “Superheroes” music medley, Skyliners Intermediate impressed the panel of nine judges with the technical difficulty of their program. Their skate earned them their best score of the season, and Skyliners first national crown in the Intermediate division. Established in 2001 by a group of parents, the Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team has grown into one of the top synchronized skating teams in the country with 11 lines and 190 skaters ranging in age from 5 to 26.
