On February 27 Councilman Daniel Dromm and co-sponsors Asian Community United Society, Emblem Health and First American International Bank ushered in the Year of the Monkey at the 6th Annual Lunar New Year celebration at St. James Episcopal Church, Elmhurst.

The event featured traditional Korean drumming, Chinese dance, Vietnamese music, a performance by PS 7 students, free face painting and arts/crafts for children, and lion dancing. It concluded with a parade along Broadway during which Dromm and the lion dancers visited local businesses. Dromm first established the event in 2011 to create an opportunity for the Asian American communities of Elmhurst to increase their visibility and celebrate their cultural pride while sowing the seeds for future organizing. The Elmhurst celebration has steadily grown from the small block of performances the community enjoyed in its first year and is now among the neighborhood’s most cherished events.
