This was Peralta’s seventh annual coat drive. State Senator Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst), in cooperation with Woodside on the Move, and other co-sponsors donated more than 1,700 winter coats to local community and faith-based organizations, which will distribute them to needy families and individuals. This was Peralta’s seventh annual coat drive. Days after New York City was blanketed by the second largest snowstorm in more than a century, with an astonishing 34-inch snowfall in Jackson Heights, state Senator Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst), in cooperation with Woodside on the Move, donated more than 1,700 winter coats to local community and faith-based organizations, which will distribute them to needy families and individuals. The event was co-sponsored by US Representative Joseph Crowley, Burlington Coat Factory, K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, Delta Airlines, United Health Care and Starbucks Coffee Company. Assemblymembers Michael DenDekker (D-East Elmhurst) and Aravella Simotas (D-Astoria) also participated in the Senator’s coat drive.

This was Senator Peralta’s seventh annual coat drive, which took place January 30, in his district office. “A lot of our hard-working families are struggling to keep warm, and it is my hope that these coats will help them fight the frigid temperatures of the winter,” Peralta said. “These coats will provide some relief to families who are struggling to make ends meet, especially with winter-related expenses, such as heat.”

Peralta noted, “Fortunately, we are able to assist more and more families and individuals each year. In 2011, we distributed 250 coats, and this year we are distributing more than 1,700. Every year we are providing our neighbors with more coats, thanks to the generosity of all the co-sponsors. Without them, the coat drive wouldn’t be a reality winter after winter.”

“Getting through the winter months can be particularly harsh for our city’s vulnerable communities,” said Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “As temperatures continue to drop, no one should have to go without something as basic as a warm coat. I’m proud to team up with Senator Peralta, Woodside on the Move and all of the partners involved in this drive to provide coats to those New Yorkers who need it most.”

Assemblyman DenDekker noted, “I want to thank Senator Peralta, Congressman Crowley, and Woodside on the Move for sponsoring this important event. Too many members of our community cannot afford proper outdoor clothing, and our recent snowstorm only highlights how critical coat drives are. I am honored to participate, and I hope that together we can ensure that our community stays warm this winter.”

Assemblywoman Simotas said, “Donating and distributing coats during the winter months is a way for the community to demonstrate its compassion and assist those in need. I applaud Senator Peralta for organizing this coat drive and making sure that we never forget our obligation to help our neighbors.”

“Delta is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work each day,” said Gail Grimmett, Senior Vice President-New York, Delta Air Lines. “On behalf of our more than 10,000 New Yorkbased Delta employees, we are proud to partner again with Senator Peralta and Woodside on the Move on their annual coat drive to benefit our neighbors in this community.”

“We are delighted to be the national charity partner in the Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Coat Drive,” said Lisa Gurwitch, President and CEO of K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers. “The relationship allows us to provide desperately needed coats through 300 community charities – such as Senator Peralta’s office – so that people nationwide can stay warmer this season. The demand for coats is so great, and just one coat can do wonders for someone in need this winter.”

Amy T. Paul, the Executive Director of Woodside on the Move: “We thank Senator Peralta and Congressman Joseph Crowley for their leadership and tireless support of Woodside on the Move and Western Queens communities.”

United Healthcare said, “UnitedHealthcare is dedicated to helping people nationwide live healthier lives by simplifying the health care experience, meeting consumer health and wellness needs, and sustaining trusted relationships with care providers.”
