Call To Reopen Astor Park Restrooms

By Liz Goff
A group of Astoria parents and residents are calling on officials at the Queens Department of Parks & Recreation to speed up plumbing repairs at Astoria Park playground.

More than 300 people have signed an online petition asking Parks officials to reopen restrooms at the Charybdeis Playground for the 2016 season. The restrooms were shut down last summer to allow crews to make repairs, including the installation of a new sewer line at the sites.

Restrooms at the waterfront playground are closed during winter months, leaving parents to wonder how repairs are progressing. Restrooms near the Astoria Park track and tennis courts remain open in the winter, but they are “quite a distance” from the playground and difficult for little legs to walk, one parent said..

“With the start of the 2016 park-going season just a few months away, we are looking at the prospect of another full year without clean, safe and operational bathrooms in the playground,” the petition reads. “Now is the time to address this issue and make the reopening of the restrooms the priority it should be.”

“The repairs are part of a larger project that will keep the restrooms in good working condition for years to come,” a parks spokesperson said.

Crews are working to complete the repairs by this spring, the spokesperson said. If that is not possible, the Parks Department will install portable toilets at the site, just as they did in 2015.

Members of the Astoria Park Alliance have scheduled a meeting with Parks Department Queens Commissioner Dorothy Lewandoski at 7 p.m. on February 2 at the Bohemian Hall on 24th Avenue and 30th Street to discuss progress of the restroom repairs.
