Giving Generously

The Greek-American Homeowners Association (GAHOA) in Astoria prepared a full, free Thanksgiving Dinner to the community and to families in need on Thanksgiving Day. The room was filled with the scent and feeling of the holiday – gravy and gratitude, turkey and thanks. According to GAHOA President George Alexiou, honorary President and Chairman of the Thanksgiving Day Dinner, more than 540 turkeys were delivered to families in need and 112 turkeys were prepared at the GAHOA headquarters at 23-49 31st Street. More than 2,000 persons were served. “Everything was donated. We delivered meals to people. They come and go today and have some turkey, sweet potato, dessert and a glass of wine,” Alexiou said. Volunteers also packed up boxes containing hundreds of meals, which was brought to families unable to come in person. Present at the event was Archbishop Dimitrios of America, former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., state Senator Jose Peralta, Councilman Costa Constantinides, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas and state Senator Mike Gianaris. The GAHOA has been preparing this annual tradition for more than a quarter century.
