Shop Local On Small Business Saturday

This coming Saturday is Small Business Saturday, the day dedicated to doing our holiday shopping within our neighborhoods, at local, family-owned businesses, and as a reward, having some fine meals in the locally owned restaurants. This not only benefits those “mom and pop shops,” but benefits ourselves! These small businesses help our neighborhoods thrive, employing the community, and saving us shipping costs, traffic and parking woes, and offering a unique flavor to our gift-giving while making shopping a pleasant experience for once. As one of our esteemed regular letter-writers pointed out, we can also pick up gift certificates as presents – for spas, hairstylists and barbers, restaurants of course, and even other services we know our loved ones will appreciate, perhaps pet-grooming and pet shops, shoes and other apparel, which is hard to pick out for others, hobby shops, or classes such as music/gym/yoga/martial arts – you name it, Queens has got it! Just keep your subject’s interests in mind and they will be so grateful for your thoughtful gift.

A thriving shopping strip not only raises the standard of living, it adds value to our homes and community, with shop owners contributing to the Business Improvement District’s beautifying, cleaning, decorating and festival arrangements.

The economy affects every aspect of our lives. Remember what a difference it made in It’s a Wonderful Life? So keep it in the family, and shop local on Saturday!
