Dennis Syntilas Way

Photos Jason D. Antos The legacy of Dennis Syntilas was honored with a street co-naming at 30th Street and 30th Avenue on October 17 in front of Athens Square Plaza.

Syntilas, a civic leader and community organizer, helped make Greek culture an enduring part of the Queens cultural mosaic.

An immigrant, Syntilas worked hard and went on to found the Greek- American Homeowners Association, a community based organization that connects Greek-Americans with government resources and promotes civic engagement. The organization is best known for coordinating the Thanksgiving Day dinner and meal delivery service for those in need.

State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas, George Stamatiades and Greek-American Homeowners Association President George Alexiou were present as was Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski.

The unveiling of the sign designating the corner of 30th Street and 30th Avenue conamed Dennis Syntilas Way in honor of the Greek-American community organizer. “It is my distinct honor to recognize Dennis Syntilas with this co-naming,” said Councilman Costa Constantinides. “As a founder of the Greek-American Homeowners Association and Athens Square, he made it his mission to promote charity within his neighborhood.”

Also on hand were Syntilas’ family, including Rita Syntilas, his widow.
