Sign Up To Shovel Snow

Department of Sanitation (DOS) officials last week announced that the agency is currently accepting registration of day laborers, the unemployed and others on its snow removal call list.

Those registered will be called to remove snow and ice from streets in sections of Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island following heavy snowfalls, DOS officials said.

Payment for the job starts at $12 per hour and increases to $18 per hour after completion of the first 40 hours.

Queens residents interested in registering may do so at the Queens West 2 Sanitation Garage at 52-35 58th Street or at any local garage between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Applicants must be 18 years or older, eligible to work in the United States and able to perform heavy physical labor.

Applicants must bring two, 1½ inch square photos, two documented proofs of identity and employment eligibility such as a driver’s license, federal, state or city identification, school photo ID or passport to register.
