Apply Now For Holiday Jobs

By Liz Goff
Queens job hunters hoping to cash-in on holiday employment opportunities are being urged to apply early again this year.

The annual holiday hiring period is currently underway in New York City, where retailers hire thousands of temporary workers to stock shelves and handle crowds of holiday shoppers.

Depending on the job, seasonal workers this year can expect to earn up to $10 an hour for store clerk positions and $15 to $20 an hour for store managers.

  • Macy’s is planning to hire 78,000 seasonal workers for the 2012 holiday season to staff its stores, call centers and distribution centers. To apply, visit www.Macysjobs.com/
  • JC Penny, with four stores in New York City, is planning to hire 37,000 seasonal workers this year. To apply, visit www.jcpenny.net/
  • Target is planning to hire 70,000 yuletide workers nationwide, with dozens of seasonal opportunities in its stores in Queens and Brooklyn. To apply, visit www.Target.com.
  • Lord & Taylor is hiring sales associates and supply associates at its Manhattan and Long Island stores. To apply, visit www.Lordandtaylor.com/careers.
  • Saks Fifth Avenue is hiring gift wrappers and extra servers at its Café stores in Manhattan. To apply, visit www.Careersatsaks.com/JobSearch/temp.
  • Last, but not least, don’t forget Toys “R” Us – one of the city’s largest seasonal employers. Toys “R” Us is anticipating hiring more than 40,000 seasonal workers nationwide this year, down from 45,000 people hired for holiday jobs in 2014. That number includes 5,000 positions in New York City for  cashiers, stock clerks, customer service workers and floor clerks at its stores in Manhattan, Queens and Long Island. Store officials said seasonal workers this year will be able to cash-in “significantly” more hours this year.

Toys ‘R’ Us officials said 20 per cent of its 2014 holiday hires stayed on after Christmas. For more information or to apply, go to www.toysrusinc.com/careers/holiday.

People interested in finding hourly employment or temporary positions during the holiday season – or all year long can also log on to www.SnagaJob.com.

Only a fraction of seasonal jobs will lead to permanent employment, job analysts said.

Analysts said people seeking temporary holiday employment, for extra cash or rent money, should move quickly, since most retailers will be hiring seasonal workers early this year.

Competition is fierce for jobs this holiday season, so apply as soon as possible, retailers said.
