Take Delight In Autumn

The meteorological beginning of fall is September 1, meaning we start looking for autumnal weather as of that day. However, the vagaries of weather have been such that we experienced two heat waves the first two weeks of this month, and numerous days with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. Astronomical fall, what we generally consider the official start to autumn occurred yesterday. And the good news is that those sweltering summer days are in fact dwindling, so we can start looking forward to crisp evenings and bright, cool, colorful days.

Even though summer vacation, the most beloved time of year is ended, there are those of us who rejoice in the approach of crisp, fall sweater-weather, the Harvest Moon, the vibrant palette of changing leaves, and glorious, clear sunsets. This month, as we experience the exquisite balance of a perfectly equal day and night, or the autumnal equinox, we note our energy and alertness picking up, compared to the summer doldrums. We can again take pleasure in assembling outfits, selecting from our closets and shopping for some new items, even starting to layer, using those rich, golden color combinations.

The transience of spring, summer and fall is bittersweet, but this variation allows us to never get into too deep of a rut as we change our daily routines, and hopefully learn to appreciate today, since it will never return.

So as part of the new routine, we plan to stave off the SAD (seasonal affective disorder) feelings by rising early enough to savor the crisp morning sunshine, while sipping the robust flavors of hot tea or coffee, and reacquaint ourselves with our neighborhoods – and new ones – by taking brisk walks in the fresh air. We hope you will enjoy nature’s resplendent display, finding much pleasure in the new season. If not, we will discuss winter with you in about three months!
