Raring To Go Back To School

As the old Robert Hall clothing chain’s ad jingle went, “School bells ring and children sing, it’s back to Robert Hall again” – it’s that time of year most parents love and most children hate – Back to School time! Over the past few weeks, schools have been getting back in session in New York City for students enrolled in Universal Pre- K, elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and grad schools, etc.

We are gearing up to enjoy the splendor of autumn, the spectacular color changes on the trees around our large, leafy borough, the start of the MLB playoffs and the World Series, the kick-offs of the NFL, NBA, NHL seasons, and the return of cool, crisp weather after a rather hot, dry summer. For many, it’s also a new fall season for television shows, Broadway openings, and Hollywood A-list film releases.

This is also the time of year that the Education issue of US News & World Report is released, including the “Best High Schools,” ranked by state. It turns out, Queens can boast three high schools among the Top 10 in our state: No. 3 is Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Jamaica; No. 5 is The Baccalaureate School for Global Education, Long Island City; and No. 8 is Townsend Harris High School in Flushing.

As we once again send our youth back to school, we should savor all the usual wonderful things about Queens. We enjoy outstanding museums and recreation destinations, we partake of a multitude of ethnic cuisines and phenomenal cultural programs all year long, and now, we can even brag about having some of the top schools in New York state. Why live anywhere else?

So, study hard, play hard, work hard. We wish the best to all our Queens communities and families for another successful academic year.
