Lawmaker Joins Hunt For Jackson Heights Rapist

BY LIZ GOFF
Councilmember Daniel Dromm took time out of his Labor Day Weekend to hit the streets of Jackson Heights in search of a masked man accused of raping a local woman on September 3.

Drom handed out flyers to neighborhood residents walking on 35th Avenue near 84th Street on Sunday morning, warning them to remain alert and on the lookout for the suspect.

The Queens lawmaker described the incident as “one of the most horrific things” he’d ever heard of, Dromm said that video surveillance of the suspect pulling a ski mask over his head in the moments before he accosted the woman is evidence that his actions were “premeditated.”

Police said the 35-yer-old victim was walking home from work at about 4:40 a.m. on September 3 near 84th Street and 35th Avenue when the assailant, wearing the ski mask, pulled her into an alley between two houses and raped her.

The victim, described as an Hispanic male, 5-feet, 4-inches tall, followed the victim for blocks before he grabbed her, police said.

The suspect pressed a sharp object against the woman’s neck and demanded that she turn over her cash before he forced her into the alley and attacked her, police said.

The suspect ran down the alley and jumped a fence leading to 83rd Street to flee the scene, police said.

Anyone with information is urged to call the CrimeStoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or click on www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.

The Hotline is offering a reward of up to $2,500 to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Startled neighbors described the attack as “shocking, and scary,” and said they believe the NYPD will find the suspect.

”Something like this doesn’t happen in Jackson Heights,” Dromm said. “At times like this, the community comes together. We are going to find and put this person in jail” Dromm said.
