Forest Hills Hospital Appoints New Executive Director

Queens native Susan Browning, a veteran healthcare administrator for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, has been appointed executive director at Forest Hills Hospital.

She takes over for Rita Merceica, RN, who has been appointed regional executive director for the health system in Brooklyn.
In her new role, Ms. Browning will oversee day-to-day operations and strategic plans for the 300-bed hospital, which treats more than 50,000 emergency department visits each year and provides extensive ambulatory services throughout Queens.
“My goals for Forest Hills are to further build it, establishing it as a destination hospital for the Queens region and beyond,” said Ms. Browning, who has been with the health system for 17 years.
Immediately prior to her appointment, she was vice president of the health system’s neurosurgery, neurology, ENT/head and neck and ophthalmology services lines.  She also served as senior vice president for Business Development and Practice Management, as well as vice president and chief of staff for Staten Island University Hospital, a 700-bed tertiary hospital of the health system.
Ms. Browning was born and raised in Woodside, Queens. As an undergraduate at Barnard College, majoring in biology and minoring in economics, her interest in patient care and public health led her to think about becoming an obstetrician/gynecologist.  However, during her sophomore year, Ms. Browning interned at Mount Sinai Medical Center gaining exposure to the administrative aspects of healthcare, and instead pursued a career in administration.
While completing her Master’s Degree in Public Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, with a concentration in health policy and management, she worked full-time as an administrative fellow at New York Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Ms. Browning remained at NYM for 7 ½ years, moving into progressively senior level positions before coming to North Shore-LIJ in 1998.
Married for 23 years to John Boubour, also a native of Woodside, the couple have two teenage children and live on Long Island.
