NYPD Seeking School Crossing Guards

By Liz Goff
Queens police officials are searching for a few good School Crossing Guards.

NYPD officials said there is a shortage of school crossing guards in the Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Sunnyside areas, and they are seeking qualified local residents to fill the posts.

School Crossing Guards receive training by the NYPD prior to their assignment, and are required to work, in uniform, according to schedules determined by school principals and commanders at local precincts, NYPD officials said.

Applicants must pass a thorough background check, must have a clean record and must pass alcohol and substance tests. Prior experience is not a requirement, officials said.

NYPD officials said applicants should possess appropriate social skills and must be able to work well with children and adults. “The ability to be patient is also helpful,” the officials said.

For additional information, (including starting salary, benefits, education requirements, uniform requirements and allowance), contact the Community Affairs Officer at your local police precinct, or call 1-646-610-5000 and ask for an application for a School Crossing Guard position.
