Maspeth House Blaze Injures Three

A three-alarm blaze tore through two homes in Maspeth on August 9, injuring two firefighters and a local resident.

Fire officials said a preliminary report indicates the blaze started about 2:50 am in the basement of a home at 52nd Avenue and 70th Street and rapidly spread to the first floor of the structure.

Flames shooting from the rooftop of the home also sparked a blaze on the roof of an adjacent home, fire officials said.

More than 144 firefighters from five fire companies battled both fires for more than two hours before it was brought under control.

A neighbor who spotted flames coming from the basement of the first home alerted first responders and pounded on the door of the house to awaken the residents, a fire spokesperson said.

A resident injured in the blaze refused medical attention at the scene. One injured firefighter was treated at the scene and a second firefighter was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center with minor injuries.

When it was all over, the first house suffered significant damage and the second home was slightly damaged by the fire.
