New Names For Court Square Streets

By Liz Goff
The decades-old Court Square neighborhood in Long Island City has outgrown its name, City Council Speaker Jimmy Van Bramer said.

A bill introduced by Van Bramer that calls for the subdivision of Court Square was unanimously approved by the City Council on July 30. When the bill is signed into law by Mayor Bill deBlasio, two streets near the landmark Supreme Court Building in Long Island City will be renamed “Court Square East” and “Court Square West.”

When the change goes into effect, a street leading from Court Square to Thomson Avenue will be renamed “Court Square East and a street leading from Court Square to Jackson Avenue will be renamed “Court Square West,” Van Bramer said.

The Queens lawmaker said he introduced the proposal in March 2014 in an effort to avoid confusion by first responders answering emergency calls in the area.
