By Nazija Akter

With a newly built roof, and the US Open fast approaching, Arthur Ashe stadium is preparing to host its annual Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day. This is the largest, single-day tennis and entertainment event in the world, with well-known performers, athletes, and stars, all celebrating the life of Arthur Ashe. Arthur Ashe, born in 1943, is honoured as the only African American player ever to win the men’s single title at Wimbledon, the Australian Open, or the US Open. He also co-founded the National Junior Tennis League. He envisioned NJTL "as a way to gain and hold the attention of young people in the inner cities and other poor environments so that we can teach them about matters more important than tennis." Ashe was also a humanitarian, founding the  Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS to raise money to prevent, treat, and cure AIDS. He was elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.

The kids’ day features a free Grounds Festival in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, followed by a ticketed show inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The free festival includes interactive games, music, and tennis for families. Participants have a chance to win prizes, watch professional athletes, and enjoy a free concert. Past performers at the event include Ariana Grande, Ne-Yo, The Wanted, and Rihanna. Proceeds from the kid’s day will go on to benefit the USTA Foundation which helps the National Junior Tennis and Learning Network. To learn more about the event, visit arthurashekidsday.com
