More than 2,000 Queens youngsters will face a tough reality on August 8 – school bells will soon be ringing in the new year.

The Queens lawmaker has partnered with more than 20 businesses and organizations in his East Elmhurst/Corona district to sponsor the August 8 event that will supply backpacks, notebooks, calculators, rulers, pens, pencils and other supplies to 2,100 area youngsters who will head back to school next month.

The event will take lace from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, behind St. Paul the Apostle Church on 98th Place and 57th Avenue in Corona.  In case of rain, the giveaway will take place inside the church, Peralta said.
Peralta will hand out one backpack to each child in attendance. Each backpack will contain an assortment of school supplies.
The day will also feature family activities such as face paintng, games and rock climbing, Peralta said.
“During these tough economic times, many families may be facing a hard time making ends meet, and it is important that education continues forward even when many are tightening their belts, Peralta said.
