Katch Astoria

Katch Astoria is proudly celebrating its 2 year Anniversary and everyone is invited to come and enjoy great food, cocktails and batch beers out in the 5,000 square foot outdoor patio, or in the sleek, cool dining room inside. It’s not surprising that Katch Astoria was voted Best Bar, Best Beer Menu, Best Singles Spot and Best Event Space in Queens. Indeed this is a wonderful venue in which to host a private event and all are invited every Wednesday night for “Dinner and a Movie” outdoors all summer. Katch is located just off 30th Avenue, on a sliver of the angular street called Newtown Avenue, just a few steps from the N train/30th Avenue station.

Tino Tsutras is the tireless manager, always on hand to ensure a great experience. Together with the bar manager, Marisa Dreesen, and the new Executive Chef, Andrew Weisel, you’re in for a relaxing evening of great food, drinks, and fun at this award-winning entertainment bar. My friend and I enjoyed cool breezes out on the patio and settled in with some of Katch’s inventive cocktails, which change weekly and seasonally to offer something new every time. A concoction called “Marisa’s Thing Thing” is a delightful mix of purity vodka infused with fresh pineapple, served with a wedge of the vodka-soaked fruit on the rim. The White Kosmo is cool and refreshing with fig vodka, fresh lime juice and white cranberry juice, while the Kadillac Margarita packs a delicious punch. The “New Borough Beer Geeks Menu” features a local, single batch beer from breweries in the boroughs that last until they finish. Then there’s something new to try. There is an astounding variety of craft IPA’s, lagers, and stouts on the menu and there are always new additions.

While there are many screens on which to watch your favorite game, they are all muted and this allows for friendly conversation among the mature crowd. Families are welcome too, as you choose your spacious table indoors, or eat at one of the long, communal tables, or grab a picnic table outside and relax. Either way, the service is knowledgeable and friendly. We began with Chef Andrew’s Maryland crab cake, crunchy on the outside and full of sweet crab meat and mild seasonings served with chili remoulade sauce that made for a spicy counterpoint ($14.50). Next came crunchy, plump coconut shrimp with a delicious mango chutney sauce, ideal for sharing at the bar or at your table ($12.75). Pork dumplings are crunchy and savory served with an Asian dipping sauce scented with scallions. Other appetizers include baked Little Neck clams oreganata topped with crispy breadcrumbs, tuna tartare, and classic French onion soup, dripping with melted gruyere cheese.

Katch Astoria has always been a great destination for fine cocktails, craft beers and wines, but the diverse menu allows you to choose among pub and bistro favorites and fine entrees and dishes in between. Katch excels in sliders and burgers, made with fine Wagyu beef (the American equivalent of Kobe beef). These handy sliders rest on chewy pretzel buns and are topped with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese for the perfect bar snack or starter ($14). The pulled pork sliders are equally as delicious made with the house-smoked pork and homemade BBQ sauce and cole slaw. You can even order a combination of both the beef and pork sliders and have it all! Full size burgers are made from high quality meat hand blended by Pat La Frieda purveyors. Topped with Maple bacon and mac and cheese, this is a handful of goodness. Try the classic cheeseburger too, served with red pepper aioli on a brioche bun.

The salads at Katch Astoria are substantial enough to be a meal or you can share one with the table. Kudos for warm kale and Brussel sprout salad, flecked with dried cherries, pistachio nuts, and manchego cheese with a lemony vinaigrette dressing. Katch Cobb salad has the traditional Bibb lettuce, fresh avocado, hard cooked eggs, smoky bacon and grilled chicken with Green Goddess dressing. At lunchtime or anytime, Katch’s sandwiches can’t be beat. Hot corned beef Reuben is topped with melted Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on marble rye bread. The citrus salmon sandwich is served on a ciabatta roll with cilantro, caramelized onions and Dijon mustard to compliment the citrus grilled salmon. The vegetarian grilled vegetable panino is layered with roasted peppers, Portobello mushroom, grilled fennel and fresh mozzarella on a semolina roll.

From the menu of entrees, we chose the Chef’s crispy Long Island duck, slow-roasted until juicy and delicious, topped with lingonberry and cassis sauce and served with grilled Brussel sprouts. Grilled Asian salmon filet was a generous portion of fresh salmon served with potatoes gratin. Pork chops are prepared with a Dijon herb crust for someone with a hearty appetite. The same could be said for the prime cut ribeye steak, 12 ounces of heaven with caramelized onions and mushrooms in a demi glaze. Lagunitas fish and chips are made with IPA battered flaky cod with tartar sauce, hand cut chips and malt vinegar.

Take it south of the border with Katch Nachos, the classic crowd-pleaser, quesadillas stuffed with cheese, chicken or steak, or tacos filled with chicken, steak, or fish, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, grilled corn and black bean salsa. Of course you’ll find the perfect beer or tequila at Katch to accompany these Mexican treats.

For dessert try the chocolate mousse or mango passionfruit mousse.

Each night of the week features something special. Monday is Wing Night, Tuesday is Trivia Night, Wednesday is Dinner and a Movie Night, and Thursdays feature Surf and Turf dining with excellent beers. Live music starts at 7pm on Friday nights and the patio is always open and also available for your private event. Katch’s weekend brunch is served from 11am to 4pm, with dinner service after that. At brunch you’ll delight in red velvet waffles and chicken, steak and egg sliders, Yellowfin tuna club sandwich, pecan honey French toast, a variety of pancakes and eggs Benedict.
