SUV Slammed Into Supermarket At 50mph: NYPD

By Liz Goff
Police last week said a Mercedes Benz SUV was traveling more than 50mpj when it tore through a Pathmark Supermarket in Flushing on May 26.

Cops said the 72-year-old female driver lost control of the SUV at about 6 p.m. on May 26, when she mistook the gas pedal for the rake outside the store on Farrington Street.

A female shopper told police she had just finished paying for her groceries when she heard a man shout, “Run…Run!” The woman said she turned toward windows at the front of the store just as the SUV slammed into the building, striking two self-checkout employees who were working directly in the path of the Mercedes.

“She took out six self-checkout machines, destroyed display dividers, ran through pipes and slammed, head-on into the two workers and a couple of customers,” eyewitnesses said.

Police sources said one of the workers was badly injured. “He had a huge gash on his head, he was cut to the bone,” the sources said. The worker was taken to New York Hospital of Queens (NYHQ) where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver was also taken to NYHQ when she complained of pain, but she showed no visible signs of injury, fire officials said.

Four other people were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where they were treated for minor injuries and released, fire officials said.

The driver was not charged in the accident.
