Astoria Back-Up Victim Dies

By Liz Goff
A 63-year-old Astoria man has died of injuries he suffered when a car backed into him on 34th Avenue on May 8, police said.

Cops said Favhad Chowdbury, of 29th Street, was crossing northbound on 34th Avenue at about 4:50 p.m. on May 8 when he was struck by a 2003 Chevy Suburban that was backing up on the north side of 34th Avenue.

Police said the rear bumper of the Chevy struck Chowdbury as he tried to cross the busy street, tossing him into the center of 34th Avenue.

Chowdbury was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was listed in critical condition with multiple injuries, authorities said. He died on May 11, less than three days after the crash, authorities said.

The 35-year-old driver was not initially charged, pending the outcome of an investigation by detectives at the NYPD Highway Division Collision Investigation Squad.
