GYRO WORLD

Gyro World is Ridgewood’s new addition to the wide array of international food available on the bustling Fresh Pond Road, just a block from the M train station. Gyro World comes to us thanks to Dimitrios Petridis and his son, Thanasi along with 10 years of experience running the very successful Gyro World on Northern Blvd. in Flushing, just across the road from St. Nicholas Church.

This new Gyro World opened in February and occupies an easy-to-spot corner of Fresh Pond Road and Madison Street in the hamlet of Ridgewood. The bright, sunny dining room is washed in yellow and orange paint and a whimsical plaster relief of a Greek god perched on a cloud. Sure, you can pick up here or get your delicious Greek food delivered to your home, but you can also dine in comfortably at one of a dozen tidy tables resting on terrazzo tile, surrounded by tile accented walls and modern lighting. Families were dining together, friends and couples too. Gyro World offers high quality Greek and American dishes in a casual and comfortable setting, so you can come as you are.

Nearly everything is made from scratch at Gyro World, including their delicious spanakopita, or spinach pie filled with fresh spinach and feta, and their homemade avgolemono soup which is creamy, light and flavorful, thanks to the fresh lemon and tender chicken in the recipe. Spread some eggplant dip, spicy cheese dip called tirokafteri or tarama caviar dip onto triangles of grilled pita bread. The generously sized Greek salad is perfect for sharing, topped with a big slab of creamy feta, stuffed grape leaves, cucumber, tomato and olives ($6.95). This salad could also be your lunch or dinner, topped with grilled chicken.

The grill renders sizzling, high quality hand cut meats and burgers, all made to order and served hot and juicy. The traditional Greek gyro is made from slowroasted pork, tender and juicy and thinly sliced for easy eating. This is not the dry cubes of mystery meat you might have eaten elsewhere. This signature gyro has ‘just off the spit’ flavor and texture. You can order this succulent meat on a platter, served with your choice of rice, lemon potatoes or French fries, tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce for an economical $11.95. I highly recommend the lemon potatoes, oven roasted until golden brown, and creamy inside, scented with lemon. Another signature recipe at Gyro World is the bifteki a sort of Greek style hamburger, made with minced beef and lamb, mild spices and lots of flavor. This bifteki is shaped like a patty and served hot off the grill on a platter. A new twist includes chicken bifteki, made with the same savory spices and minced chicken for a unique taste treat. Loukaniko is homemade Greek sausage grilled so the outside skin is crisp and the inside is tender and juicy. If you can’t decide among these tempting choices, then get a combination platter and sample two or three. Best of all, these juicy meats can also be piled into a soft pita for about $7 for a quick, delicious lunch or dinner.

At lunch or anytime, enjoy Gyro World’s wrap sandwiches filled with grilled chicken or grilled vegetables. The juicy burgers can be topped with bacon, cheese, or try the Greek burger with feta cheese and their addictive hand-cut French fries. The burgers cost $4.95 to $6.95, which is cheaper than fast food and a whole lot better.

Gyro World is open seven days a week from 10:30 am for lunch, dinner, snacks, or a piece of baklava. They’ll deliver to you or you can pick your order up on your way home. Cater your next party with Gyro World and make it a success. Welcome to Ridgewood Gyro World!
