On April 18, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas, state Senator Michael Gianaris, Councilman Costa Constantinides and the Friends of Astoria Heights Park participated in a park cleanup and a tree care workshop in Astoria Heights Park. The event was part of the “Love Your Block” campaign, made possible by a grant from the Citizens Committee, which helps organize community-led block improvement projects.

“It was wonderful to see so many Astorians of all ages come together to make our neighborhood an even better place to live,” said Simotas. “The commitment of the Friends of Astoria Heights Park provides our young people with an excellent example of how we can achieve great things when we work together.”

“The Friends of Astoria Heights Park is honored to have the support of our local politicians and community board. We continue to strive to build capacity, broadening the ways in which we reach and interact with the community,” said Lynn Kennedy, a local resident and organizer of Friends of Astoria Heights Playground. “Events like Love Your Block help to nourish our neighborhoods and people, especially our younger volunteers who need to experience what it is like to be part of a larger, healthy and caring community.”

Constantinides said, “It was great to see everyone at Astoria Heights Playground participating in the neighborhood cleanup and tree care workshop. When you give care and attention to a park, you make the entire neighborhood more beautiful. I thank Friends of Astoria Heights Park for putting this event together for families throughout Astoria.”

“I was proud to take part in the Love Your Block campaign, and I am glad that the love in our community for Astoria Heights Park continues to translate into tangible improvements at this playground,” said Gianaris. “I commend Lynn Kennedy and all the Friends of Astoria Heights Park for their continued efforts on this front and vow to continue working with Councilman Constantinides and Assemblywoman Simotas to preserve, protect and improve public space in our community.”

“I am proud to work with the community and my colleagues to ensure that our children have a safe, beautiful place to play and learn,” said Simotas.
