Michael’s Restaurant…A Grand Reopening!

Welcome back Michael’s Restaurant! Michael’s has been a fixture on Broadway in Astoria for decades, serving as a home away from home for so many diners. So when a fire above the restaurant caused its temporary closure, it was a great loss to the local community. Now, Michael’s Restaurant celebrates its Grand Re-opening after seven weeks of renovations with a brand new look, and same great food and service.

Owner Angelo Georgis greets everyone warmly and indeed for many, Michael’s feels like the family kitchen. The new, cozy interior features polished brick walls, sleek banquettes, soft lighting, and historic photos of Astoria. The service is very efficient and friendly, thanks to Ann Marie, who treated us like family.

Any meal at Michael’s is a treat, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch. They start at 7am with breakfast to stay or to go with you on your way to the N train. Fluffy omelets filled with ham and cheese or veggies, egg sandwiches, toasted bagels, muffins and more will start your day off right along with a delicious cup of coffee. Lunch time is the right time for one of Michael’s triple decker sandwiches, such as the turkey club with bacon, lettuce, and tomato, or any one of their freshly filled wraps. The Mexican wrap packs a punch with grilled, spicy chicken breast, avocado, salsa and onion, while the Italiano is filled with prosciutto, mozzarella, and sun-dried tomatoes. Warm, grilled panini are very satisfying, filled with Portobello mushrooms and veggies, corned beef, roast beef and caramelized onions, or grilled chicken and mozzarella. All wraps and panini are served with French fries and can be delivered to your office or home. Michael’s Restaurant can also cater for your group event.

You simply must try Michael’s Restaurant for dinner, when the Nightly Dinner Specials are posted on the blackboard outside. For an economical $16.75, you’ll get a 3-course dinner including choice of soup or salad, entrée, dessert and coffee. The soups are homemade too, like their cream of spinach, avgolemono (chicken and orzo), and lentil. The menu changes each night of the week and Wednesday offers Mediterranean style stuffed peppers and tomatoes with rice, Irish lamb stew, or Yankee pot roast with potato pancakes. Classic fried chicken, juicy pork chops or shell steak fit into this menu as well. I really enjoyed my steak, cooked to order and served with my choice of potato and freshly sautéed broccoli, though I could have chosen spinach or peas and carrots. My friend went for seafood, and we were both amazed at the impressive jumbo stuffed shrimp, served on clam shells, overflowing with its delicious crab meat stuffing. With four to a serving, she’ll enjoy lunch or dinner again the next day. Other nightly fish specials include grilled Atlantic salmon with grilled zucchini, broiled tilapia almondine, and grilled tuna steak with chipotle sauce, all for the $16.75 complete dinner price.

From the regular menu, you can start with char grilled octopus which is supremely tender and tasty, or try Greek saganaki. This pan-fried haloumi cheese is finished with brandy that’s been set ablaze and tastes oh so delicious. Buffalo wings, fried calamari and chicken quesadilla filled with cheese are great for sharing among friends. Moving on to the entrees, try some of the sauté specialties such as veal piccata with artichokes, capers and a delicate lemon sauce. Chicken marsala has a touch of sweetness from the wine used and chicken Francaise is sautéed with butter and lemon. Pasta dishes here rival those of Italian restaurants and include linguine with asparagus and shrimp, fettuccine Alfredo with its creamy sauce, and “Dorothy’s” pasta, named for a beloved patron, which combines penne with goat cheese, wilted arugula, garlic and fine olive oil ($12.95).

For dessert, try the NY style creamy cheese cake, rice pudding, carrot cake, or apple pie, straight up or a la mode. Michael’s Brunch has them lining up for the prix fixe $13.95 feast, which includes two brunch cocktails such as a Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, Mimosa, or wine. Choose whole wheat pancakes, French toast, Belgian waffles with whipped cream or a Monte Cristo sandwich from the griddle. The burgers are great anytime, even at brunch where you can choose beef, chicken, or a garden burger with your choice of cheese. Coffee or tea is included too, and brunch goes from 9am to 3pm on Saturdays, and from 12-3pm on Sundays.
